Acres Of Ocean - Untitled EP.
Thanks to Sam for the CD. Young band from Aldridge, not afraid
to play long and complex songs, the two on this CD weighing in
at over 13 minutes. Watch out Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Muse there's
an interloper in town...
- Cymatics. Minimalist guitar opening before
the full band kicks in and fills out an already solid opening
riff. Quickly returns to more laid back style, the dynamics
are truly wonderful. Vocals are clear and make a pleasant change
from the horde of screaming/cookie monster vocalists out there.
Has a dreamy almost psychedelic feel overall. During the heavier
sections the guitars counterpoint well. Stunningly executed,
there's a lot going on here but it's dealt with effortlessly.
-
Oceanic. Subdued opening
again, has a classic era Bends/OK Computer Radiohead feel.
Has an ethereal quality, delicate and minimal but is still
very involving at the same time. Chord sequences are angular
and unusual, really shouldn't work but they do. Guitars get
heavier towards the end, effortlessly powerful and underpinned
by interesting basswork and solid drumming. A quieter song
overall, still expertly handled.
OK so I've been buzzing since hearing them
live and this EP works equally well. Good in the studio and incredible
live it's only a matter of time before they are signed. They blend
modern prog and technical rock very well and have a justified,
but never arrogant, swagger to their work. The CD is well produced
and showcases their abilities as both songwriters and musicians.
Need to see them live again soon, I'm chomping at the bit for
a copy of their new CD which should be looming nearer. The sky
is the limit for these fellas and I wish them every success for
the future
